Rafha, June 27, 2026, SPA — Throughout human history, water has been the foundation of survival and prosperity, inspiring civilizations to develop innovative methods to preserve this vital resource, a legacy clearly reflected in the reservoirs along historic Darb Zubaida, which feature a distinctive tiered interior design.The reservoirs’ tiered, stair-like interior represents one of the most notable engineering solutions employed in these water structures. It combines easy access to water with protection against the force of flash floods, improved water purification, and greater structural stability, enabling the reservoirs to endure for centuries.
Darb Zubaida features around 50 large reservoirs and water basins, carefully constructed to meet the needs of pilgrims and travelers along the route, which extends for more than 1,400 kilometers. The route comprises 27 main stations and an equal number of secondary stations, stretching from Kufa in southern Iraq through northern regions of Saudi Arabia, including Rafha, Hail, and Qassim, before reaching Makkah, forming an integrated water system that has served pilgrims throughout the ages.
Researcher, historian and archaeology enthusiast, and tour guide Khalaf Al-Ghufaili told the Saudi Press Agency that the Darb Zubaida reservoirs are not merely water storage basins but engineering landmarks that reflect advanced solutions for water management and the service of pilgrimage and trade caravans. He explained that the tiered design allowed safe access to water at varying levels while reducing the impact of flash floods and protecting the walls and foundations from erosion and collapse.
He added that the structures employed a precise water purification system in which rainwater and floodwater first passed through smaller basins, known as filters or preliminary reservoirs, where soil, gravel, and other impurities settled before the cleaner water flowed into the main reservoir. He noted that the tiered interior served not only a functional purpose but also a structural one by distributing the pressure of water and surrounding soil across multiple levels, significantly enhancing the resilience and longevity of these structures.
